The idea
People cleaning contaminated instruments wear heavy-duty rubber or plastic gloves, and a gown, mask and eye protection when splashes may occur.
In practice
Reusable sharps are retrieved with forceps or other tools, never by reaching into a tray with gloved hands.
Where people slip
Contaminated instruments can infect staff through broken skin or splashes to the eyes, nose or mouth.
