Blood and Body Fluid Spills

Captions available

The idea

Spills of blood or other potentially infectious materials are cleaned up promptly, both to prevent infection and to prevent falls.

In practice

Follow a spill response in order. First, protect yourself: gloves, and more protection if splashing is possible. Second, contain the spill and keep people from walking through it. Third, clean up the material, using tools rather than hands for anything that might be sharp. Fourth, decontaminate the surface with an appropriate disinfectant, as soon as feasible after the spill. Fifth, discard contaminated materials as regulated waste. Sixth, perform hand hygiene. Facility policy names the disinfectant and the steps.

Where people slip

Fluids on the floor, including blood, irrigation and intravenous fluid, are a leading cause of slips in the suite, so a spill is never left for later.
