Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 28 TSC 677 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Preparing Instruments for Transport
The idea
After the case, used instruments are prepared and contained so they can travel safely to the decontamination area.
In practice
Follow the steps, as the federal standard and the disinfection guideline describe them. First, every used item is treated as contaminated, whether or not it looks soiled. Second, disposable sharps go into the sharps container, and reusable sharps are placed in containers that are puncture resistant and leakproof on the sides and bottom. Third, instruments are kept moist, or presoaked or rinsed, so blood does not dry on them. Fourth, the instruments go into a durable, leakproof container that is labelled or colour-coded as biohazardous and closed before it leaves the room. Fifth, the container travels to the decontamination area by the facility's route for soiled items.
Where people slip
A closed, labelled container protects everyone who handles it on the way, including people who never entered the operating room and do not know what is inside.
