Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 7 MAS 157 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
What Standard Precautions Include
The idea
Federal infection-control guidance groups standard precautions into a set of everyday practices.
In practice
The list has eight parts. One: hand hygiene. Two: personal protective equipment whenever exposure to infectious material may occur. Three: placing and caring for patients with additional transmission-based precautions when needed. Four: respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette. Five: proper cleaning of the environment, equipment and devices. Six: safe handling of laundry. Seven: sharps safety. Eight: aseptic technique for invasive procedures such as injections.
Where people slip
These practices work together, so each one supports the others. Personal protective equipment without hand hygiene, for example, carries germs out of the room on your hands when you take your gloves off. Treat the list as one routine you follow with every patient, not a menu to choose from.
