The idea
Standard precautions are the minimum infection-prevention practices used for every patient, whether or not an infection is known or suspected.
In practice
They assume that blood, body fluids, broken skin and mucous membranes may carry infection, so the same protections apply to every person you care for.
Where people slip
Skipping precautions because a patient seems healthy is the mistake they exist to prevent.
