The idea
Transmission-based precautions are added on top of standard precautions for patients with a known or suspected infection that spreads easily.
In practice
There are three categories, named for how the germ travels: contact, droplet and airborne.
Where people slip
These precautions add to standard precautions; they never replace them, so hand hygiene still comes first.
