Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 8 MAS 184 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Putting On Protective Equipment
The idea
Personal protective equipment goes on in a set order, so each item covers what it should.
In practice
Step one: check the precautions ordered for the patient, gather the right equipment, and clean your hands. Step two: put on the gown so that it covers your clothing, with the sleeves down to the wrists and the ties fastened at the neck and waist. Step three: put on the mask or respirator, fitted around the nose and chin. Step four: put on goggles or a face shield when the precautions call for them. Step five: put on clean gloves last, pulled over the cuffs of the gown.
Where people slip
Gloves go on last because they must cover the gown's cuffs. Pulled on first, they leave a gap at the wrist and end up under the sleeves.
