Taking Off Protective Equipment

Captions available

The idea

Protective equipment comes off in a set order designed to keep the dirtiest items from touching you.

In practice

Step one: remove the gloves, glove to glove and skin to skin, so that the contaminated outside never touches your skin. Step two: remove the gown by unfastening the ties, pulling it down from the shoulders and rolling it inside out, away from your body. Step three: clean your hands. Step four: remove the goggles or face shield by the strap, without touching the front. Step five: remove the mask or respirator by its straps or ties, again without touching the front. Step six: clean your hands again.

Where people slip

The front of a mask, a face shield or a gown is the contaminated part. Touching it while taking it off can transfer exactly what the equipment was protecting you from.
