Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 7   MAS 165 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Masks and Respirators

Captions available

The idea

A face mask and a respirator are different pieces of equipment for different risks.

In practice

A face mask protects against sprays and large droplets and is placed on coughing patients; a fitted respirator, rated N ninety-five or higher, protects against tiny airborne particles.

Where people slip

A face mask is not a substitute for a respirator when airborne precautions apply.
