The idea
Routine cleaning and disinfecting of patient-care areas is part of standard precautions.
In practice
Focus on frequently touched surfaces nearest the patient, and clean shared equipment between patients; a stethoscope, for example, is cleaned before and after each use.
Where people slip
Equipment that goes from patient to patient carries germs from patient to patient unless it is cleaned in between.
