The idea
Respiratory hygiene keeps coughing patients from spreading infection in shared spaces.
In practice
Post signs; offer tissues and a mask to anyone coughing; encourage hand hygiene after coughing; and, when possible, seat people with respiratory symptoms more than three feet from others.
Where people slip
Staff with respiratory infections should avoid direct patient care, following the practice's policy.
