The idea
Needles and other sharps can transmit bloodborne infections, including hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV.
In practice
Preventing sharps injuries is part of standard precautions: use the safety devices provided, do not recap used needles, and place used sharps straight into a sharps container.
Where people slip
A sharp stays dangerous until it is in the container, so keep your attention on it through cleanup.
