Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 7 MAS 161 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Washing Hands With Soap and Water
The idea
Handwashing follows a set sequence, so that every surface of the hands is cleaned.
In practice
Step one: wet your hands under running water and apply the approved soap. Step two: lather by rubbing your hands together. Step three: scrub every surface, including the palms, between the fingers, the backs of the hands and fingers, the fingertips and the thumbs, for at least twenty seconds. Step four: rinse well under clean running water. Step five: dry with a clean disposable towel. Step six: use a clean paper towel to turn off the faucet.
Where people slip
Turning the faucet off with clean bare hands puts the germs from the handle straight back on them. The paper towel is part of the procedure, not an extra.
