The idea
Hands may be cleaned with an alcohol-based rub containing at least sixty percent alcohol, or with soap and water.
In practice
Unless hands are visibly soiled, alcohol rub is preferred; rub every surface of hands and wrists for about twenty seconds, until dry.
Where people slip
When hands are visibly dirty, or the patient has C. difficile, use soap and water instead.
