A mitochondrion is a double-membrane organelle that produces most of a cell's ATP by cellular respiration, its inner membrane folded into cristae.
In practice
Muscle cells, which demand large amounts of ATP for contraction, pack an especially high concentration of mitochondria.

Mitochondria carry their own DNA and ribosomes, distinct from those in the nucleus and cytoplasm.
