The idea
The electron transport chain is a series of membrane protein complexes passing electrons from NADH and FADH2 to oxygen, pumping hydrogen ions across the membrane.
In practice
Oxygen is the chain's final electron acceptor, combining with electrons and hydrogen ions to form water.
