Anaerobic cellular respiration runs an electron transport chain to an inorganic molecule other than oxygen as the final electron acceptor.

Certain sulfate-reducing bacteria pass electrons down a transport chain to sulfate instead of oxygen, releasing hydrogen sulfide gas.
