The idea

The book's field guide to the five levels gives, for each, the voice a person speaks in, what a leader can observe, the need beneath it and the response that fits.

In practice

Step one, subsistence, "I am surviving": narrowing, flatness and withdrawal; the need is relief, so subtract demands and do not inspire or stretch. Step two, security, "I need to know I am safe": cautious speech and questions about change; the need is clarity, so share what is known and unknown and follow through. Step three, belonging, "I need to know I belong": strong reactions to inclusion and exclusion; the need is visible regard, so invite the person into conversations that matter. Step four, prestige, "I need to know my work matters": attention to credit and feedback; the need is specific recognition, so attribute and advocate. Step five, flourishing, "I am becoming": intrinsic motivation and creative risk; the need is challenge and latitude, so trust their judgment and get out of their way.

Where people slip

The book's warning is that the right response at one level is the wrong one at another: support that helps at the security level is patronising at the prestige level, and challenge that grows a flourishing person crushes someone in subsistence.
