The Lost ARC / Unit 2 ARC 059 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Know, Don't Know, Doing
The idea
The book calls it clarifying leadership: tell people what you know, what you do not know, and what you are doing about it, a three-part formula of knowledge, uncertainty and action.
In practice
Step one: say what you know, including what has been confirmed and by whom. Step two: say what you do not know, and when you expect to know it; if something cannot be shared, say that it cannot and explain why. Step three: say what you are doing about the gaps, the meetings you have set and the questions you have asked. Step four: give incomplete answers rather than none, because "Here is what I know so far, and here is when I expect to know more" beats silence.
Where people slip
The formula requires honesty, not certainty or good news. The book's warning is that people can handle uncertainty from a leader they trust to be honest about it, but not the suspicion that the leader knows more than they say.
