Subsistence

The idea
Subsistence, in the book's term, is the condition in which survival, physical, financial or emotional, takes so much attention that nothing else gains traction.
In practice
Purpose, creativity and growth all needing spare mental capacity that chronic pressure has used up.
Where people slip
The book calls subsistence the gravitational floor of motivation, and the first condition a leader must learn to recognise.
