The idea
The book argues you cannot inspire, challenge or recognise someone out of subsistence, because each of those needs a surplus the person does not have.
In practice
Praise offered to someone overwhelmed, which the book likens to complimenting someone who is choking.
Where people slip
Challenge assumes a foundation of safety and competence; for a person in subsistence it is one more demand on depleted resources.
