The Subsistence Diagnostic

The idea

The book's subsistence diagnostic names six signals a leader can learn to read, because people in survival mode have often learned to hide their distress.

In practice

Step one: look for cognitive narrowing, a person who cannot engage with anything beyond this week. Step two: look for emotional flattening, an affect so uniformly fine it becomes suspicious. Step three: look for initiative collapse, doing exactly what is asked and nothing more. Step four: look for relational withdrawal, eating alone and writing instead of talking. Step five: look for hypervigilance, frequent questions about job security and new documentation of once-informal habits. Step six: look for physical signals, fatigue, illness and disrupted sleep.

Where people slip

The book is careful: no single signal is diagnostic. Several together, in someone whose earlier work was stronger, suggest subsistence rather than laziness.
