Belonging Through Attention

Captions available

The idea

The book argues leaders build belonging through attention rather than programmes: small decisions, repeated daily, that together form a team's relational architecture.

In practice

Step one: notice whom you greet first in the morning, and whom you never greet. Step two: name contributions specifically in meetings, and notice whose names you use. Step three: check who gets invited into the conversations that matter. Step four: seek out, and visibly rely on, the expertise of the people the informal social structure is most likely to miss. Step five: repeat it for weeks and months, because a single gesture is one data point, not a pattern.

Where people slip

Proximity, shared space and membership do not create belonging on their own. The book's instruction is to build it on purpose, with particular attention to the people most likely to fall through the cracks.
