The Lost ARC / Unit 4   ARC 101 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Dominance and Prestige

Captions available

The idea

Joseph Henrich and Francisco Gil-White argued in two thousand one that people gain status two ways: by dominance, through force and fear, or by prestige, freely conferred.

In practice

One manager obeyed because people fear him; another sought out because people want to learn from her.

Where people slip

In their account, prestige is deference given voluntarily to the skilled, so others can stay close and learn.
