The Three Questions Revisited
The idea
The capstone returns to the book's three questions, now with the whole framework behind each one, to apply them to a single person.
In practice
Step one: place the person on the hierarchy, using the field guide's signals from unit six, and hold the answer loosely. Step two: find the need most frustrated right now, autonomy, relatedness or competence, remembering that the three depend on one another. Step three: read the trust climate, including whether distrust has taken root, and what the culture teaches people like this person. Step four: choose the posture the answers call for, activate, inhibit or listen first, and watch what happens.
Where people slip
The book promises diagnostic precision from these questions; because, as unit six showed, the hierarchy is a lens rather than a law, each answer is provisional, and the fourth step is where the diagnosis is tested.
