The Lost ARC / Unit 18   ARC 430 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds

Activate, Inhibit, or Listen?

The idea

The three answers point to a posture, and the book's rule is that active listening decides which of the other two a person needs.

In practice

Step one: listen first, in conversation and to behaviour, because the person's actual condition may differ from the one you assumed. Step two: activate when the person has safety, baseline skill and latent readiness, and the stretch serves both them and the mission. Step three: inhibit when the person is heading toward harm, and make the restraint temporary, targeted and transparent. Step four: check the result against the ARC, whether autonomy, relatedness and competence are stronger or weaker for the intervention.

Where people slip

The book's diagnostic warns against a default style: the right posture depends on the person's actual condition, and a leader who changes approach on new information is using the framework as intended.
