Does It Strengthen the ARC?

The idea

The book gives one diagnostic question for any act of restraint: does this intervention strengthen or weaken the person's autonomy, relatedness and competence?

In practice

Step one: name the harm you are preventing, to the person's health, reputation, relationships or trajectory, and check it is theirs, not yours. Step two: tell the person directly what you are doing and why. Step three: define when the restraint will be revisited or lifted. Step four: ask whether it creates space for recovery, prevents damage or enforces an ethical boundary; if so, it is leadership. Step five: ask whether it removes choice, isolates the person or undermines their confidence; if so, it is control, however it is framed.

Where people slip

The book's reflection for leaders is pointed: when have you used restraint to protect someone, and when to protect yourself?
