Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 22 TSC 537 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Using Suction Well
The idea
Good suction keeps the field visible, removes smoke, and prevents blood and fluid from collecting where the surgeon is working.
In practice
Follow the habits in order. First, choose the tip for the job: general surface work, large volumes, or deep and narrow spaces. Second, keep the tubing secured so the tip stays on the field. Third, keep the next likely tip ready, especially when bleeding increases. Fourth, watch that the suction is working, and tell the circulating nurse at once if it stops or the canister is filling. Fifth, avoid pulling delicate tissue into the tip; a rigid tip designed for surface use is less likely to do so.
Where people slip
Suction that clogs during heavy bleeding costs the surgeon time and vision at the worst moment, so the backup is ready before it is needed.
