The idea
Irrigation rinses the surgical site with sterile fluid, usually warmed, to clear blood and debris.
In practice
The circulating nurse records wound irrigation in the patient's record, and warmed fluids also help prevent the patient from losing body heat during long cases.
Where people slip
Irrigation fluid is labelled on the field like any other solution, and the amount used is reported when asked.
