Suction Tips
The idea
Suction tips connect to a suction source and remove blood, fluid and debris from the surgical field so the surgeon can see.
In practice
Learn the three most common tips by the job they do. First, the Yankauer is a rigid tip for general surface suction, and it is less likely to pull in tissue; anesthesia providers also use one to clear the mouth and throat. Second, the Poole is a long tube with a perforated outer sleeve, for removing large volumes of fluid from the abdomen or another cavity; with the sleeve removed, the inner tube gives finer suction. Third, the Frazier is a fine, angled tip for deep, narrow spaces, such as in ear, nose and throat work and neurosurgery.
Where people slip
The right tip depends on the space and the volume of fluid. A fine Frazier in a pool of blood will clog and fall behind, while a Poole in a narrow nasal cavity will not fit.
