The idea
The Balfour is a large self-retaining retractor used for big abdominal incisions.
In practice
It provides retraction in more than one direction, holding the wound edges apart with adjustable blades.
Where people slip
It has removable blades and parts, so each one is counted separately and checked when the retractor comes out of the wound.
