The idea
The Weitlaner is a small self-retaining retractor that holds open a small or shallow wound by itself.
In practice
Its toothed arms spread the wound edges and a ratchet locks them in place, freeing the assistant's hands.

Its teeth are sharp, so it is handled with the same care as other sharp retractors.
