Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 18 TSC 441 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
From Prep to Incision: The Sequence
The idea
Between positioning and the first incision, a fixed sequence prepares the site so that it is safe, sterile and correct.
In practice
Follow the sequence. First, the patient is positioned and the dispersive pad is placed if monopolar electrosurgery will be used. Second, any necessary hair removal is done with clippers. Third, the skin is prepared with antiseptic and left to dry fully. Fourth, the sterile drapes are applied. Fifth, cords and tubing are passed off the field and secured, and the electrosurgical pencil is placed in its holster. Sixth, the time out is held, including confirming the site and the marking. Seventh, the incision is made.
Where people slip
Each step depends on the one before. Draping over wet prep, or holding the time out before the field is ready, undoes the protection the sequence is built to give.
