Draping Principles
The idea
Sterile drapes create a barrier between the prepared surgical site and everything around it, and they are handled so that they stay sterile.
In practice
Learn the principles in order. First, the drapes are sterile, and they go on only after the skin preparation is dry. Second, they are handled as little as possible and kept above waist level. Third, a drape that falls below table level, touches an unsterile surface, or is placed incorrectly is not moved back; it is left or replaced according to policy. Fourth, drapes with holes, tears or moisture strike-through no longer act as a barrier. Fifth, only the area needed for the procedure is left exposed, which also protects the patient's privacy.
Where people slip
Draping methods differ by procedure and by the drapes a facility uses. The principles here apply to all of them; the specific steps for each drape are learned in facility training.
