Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 13 TSC 304 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Richardson and Deaver
Captions available
The idea
Richardson and Deaver retractors are larger handheld retractors used in abdominal surgery.
In practice
The Richardson has a right-angled blade for shallow to medium wounds; the Deaver has one long, continuous curve for holding back deep organs and the abdominal wall.
Where people slip
Tell them apart by shape: a sharp right angle means Richardson, a smooth sweeping curve means Deaver.
