Ethylene Oxide
The idea
Ethylene oxide is a gas used to sterilize items that heat or moisture would damage.
In practice
Learn its trade-offs in order. First, the advantage: it can sterilize heat- and moisture-sensitive devices without harming their materials. Second, the parameters: gas concentration, temperature, humidity and exposure time all affect whether it works. Third, the drawbacks: long cycles, cost, and hazards to patients and staff. Fourth, the hazard itself: the gas is flammable and explosive, and the guideline says it should be considered a known human carcinogen, so workplace exposure is limited by federal rule. Fifth, the use: critical items, and sometimes semicritical items, that cannot be steam sterilized.
Where people slip
Residual ethylene oxide left in a device can injure a patient; tissue burns from residues in implants have been reported. That is why aeration after the cycle is not optional.
