Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 6   TSC 140 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Radiation for Single-Use Items

Captions available

The idea

Ionizing radiation, such as gamma rays, sterilizes many manufactured medical products, but it is not used in hospitals.

In practice

Manufacturers use it on a large scale for items such as gloves, tubing and other plastics, which arrive already sterile in their packages.

Where people slip

A commercially sterile item stays sterile only while its package is intact, which unit seven covers.
