Hydrogen Peroxide Gas Plasma

Captions available

The idea

Hydrogen peroxide gas plasma is a low-temperature sterilization method that needs no aeration, because its by-products are water vapor and oxygen.

In practice

Follow the cycle. First, the chamber is put under deep vacuum. Second, hydrogen peroxide is vaporized into the chamber and spreads over all surfaces of the load. Third, radio-frequency energy turns the vapor into a plasma, producing highly reactive free radicals that destroy microorganisms, including spores. Fourth, filtered air returns the chamber to normal pressure, and the items can be used at once or stored. The process suits devices that cannot tolerate high temperature or humidity, such as some plastics and electrical devices.

Where people slip

The load must be dry. If moisture is present, the vacuum is not reached and the cycle aborts. Linens and paper are not acceptable packaging for this method.
