Tech in Surgery Prep / Unit 6   TSC 136 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Aeration After Ethylene Oxide

Captions available

The idea

Items sterilized with ethylene oxide absorb some of the gas and must be aerated before use.

In practice

Mechanical aeration takes many hours at raised temperature; room aeration takes days; many modern sterilizers aerate in the same chamber.

Where people slip

An item released before aeration is complete carries toxic residue to the patient and the staff.
