The idea
After the revolutions, conservatism, nationalism and liberalism competed to restore order; the Congress of Vienna asserted conservatism. Upheaval returned by mid-century, and in Italy and Germany unification prevailed over freedom. Liberal principles, toleration and equality before the law, still shaped the nation-state.
