Bolívar, San Martín, and Brazil's Emperor

Captions available

The idea

Venezuela's junta declared independence in eighteen eleven; royalists fought back with mixed-race allies. Bolívar won Haiti's help by promising to abolish slavery, relied on the llaneros, and liberated Gran Colombia. San Martín crossed the Andes; both entered Peru, the last royalist stronghold.

In practice

Pedro the First's Grito do Ipiranga, eighteen twenty-two.

Where people slip

Brazil kept an emperor; Cúcuta abolished slavery gradually.
