Social Sciences and History / Unit 6   SSH 0526 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Capitalism, Mechanization, and Marx

Captions available

The idea

Mechanization, driven by capitalism, made owners rich at high cost to workers: skilled artisans' handiwork became unskilled, low-paid machine tending, and workers lost control of their conditions. Marx answered that the bourgeoisie exploited labor, that class struggle underlay all history, and that socialism would follow.

In practice

Luddites breaking machines.

Where people slip

Unit 15 owns Marx and Smith; unit 04 owns the Industrial Revolution.
