Social Sciences and History / Unit 6   SSH 0524 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Mexico: Hidalgo to the Republic

Captions available

The idea

Hidalgo's Grito de Dolores of eighteen ten called peasants and miners against the viceroyalty; his social demands cost him creole support. In eighteen twenty-one Iturbide's Plan de Iguala won independence as a monarchy; he abdicated in twenty-three and Mexico became a republic.

In practice

The Virgin of Guadalupe as national symbol.

Where people slip

The anchor's summary misdates the Grito to eighteen sixteen.
