Creoles, Juntas, and Cádiz

Captions available

The idea

Creole elites, American-born of European descent, resented the peninsulares' political power and Spain's economic restrictions. When France overthrew Spain's monarchy, creoles sat on local juntas and some joined the Cortes at Cádiz, which wrote a short-lived constitution. That taught them independence was possible.

In practice

Viceroyalties ruled by the king's direct representatives.

Where people slip

The models were the United States and France.
