The idea
Near vision is screened with a handheld near-vision chart.
In practice
Trouble with near vision is common in middle-aged and older adults, as the lens stiffens and focuses less well, a condition called presbyopia.
Where people slip
Record the result for each eye, and note whether the patient wore reading glasses during the screening.
