Performing a Distance Vision Screening

Captions available

The idea

A distance vision screening follows a consistent routine, so that results can be compared from one visit to the next.

In practice

Step one: place the patient twenty feet from a well-lit chart. Step two: ask whether they wear glasses or contacts for distance, and test with them on if so, noting that you did. Step three: cover one eye and ask the patient to read the smallest line they can. Step four: record the result for that eye as a fraction, such as twenty over forty. Step five: repeat with the other eye covered, and record that result separately.

Where people slip

Record each eye separately and note whether lenses were worn. A result recorded without those details cannot be compared at the next visit.
