The idea
The second stage of labour is the baby's passage through the birth canal, from full dilation to birth, with the mother pushing.
In practice
Crowning, the head appearing first, then one shoulder and the other.
Where people slip
This stage takes about ten to forty minutes. An episiotomy, once routine, is now used only when warranted.
