Human Growth and Development / Unit 2   HGD 0209 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Vaginal and Cesarean Birth

Captions available

The idea

A cesarean delivers the baby through an incision in the abdomen and uterus, when vaginal birth is unsafe, such as a breech presentation.

In practice

A large fetus, a tangled cord, or a placenta covering the cervix leading to surgery.

Where people slip

Vaginal delivery near term is generally safest, with faster recovery. After a cesarean, a later vaginal birth is often possible.
