Birthing Positions Across Cultures
Captions available
The idea
Birthing positions vary worldwide; upright positions use gravity, while lying on the back, the supine position, is most common in the United States.
In practice
Upright birth, usual in the West before the seventeenth century, giving way to the hospital bed.
Where people slip
The supine position spread with hospital birth: in one Nigerian study, over ninety percent gave birth lying down.
