Human Growth and Development / Unit 2 HGD 0214 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Low Birth Weight and Preterm Birth
Captions available
The idea
Low birth weight is under five pounds eight ounces; preterm birth is before thirty-seven weeks. One measures weight, the other timing.
In practice
A full-term baby small for gestational age, below the tenth percentile, beside a preterm baby of typical size.
Where people slip
The terms are often confused. Low birth weight is not automatically a lasting problem; many infants catch up with good care.
